Frequently Asked Questions
What do stone masonry contractors actually repair? Failed mortar joints, loose or missing stones, bulging wall sections, water damage and worn steps. We also clean, seal and fully restore older stonework.
Why does the type of mortar matter so much? Old stonework used soft lime mortar, which lets moisture escape. Hard modern cement traps that moisture in the stone instead. Then the stone flakes apart rather than the mortar. Matching the original mix protects the stone.
Should my wall be repointed or rebuilt? Repoint when the mortar is failing but the stones stay solid. Rebuild when the wall bulges or leans, or stones move by hand. Repointing costs far less, so check that first.
Is the white powder on my stone a problem? Usually not. It’s efflorescence, a mineral salt carried out by moisture. Most of the time it’s harmless. We’ll say so rather than sell you a repair you don’t need.
Why do my stone steps keep shifting? Almost always a shallow base. Steps heave more than any other masonry here. They need a compacted base below the freeze line, with drainage under it.
Can you match stone on an old wall? Usually, yes. Fieldstone and granite can be found again. Single pieces can often be lifted and re-set. Good matching is what makes restoration look original rather than patched.
