Dry-stack (no mortar) — the traditional method. Stones interlock by gravity, drain naturally, and settle gracefully. Best for boundary and garden walls under 4 ft.
Mortared — modern walls with mortar joints for a clean, finished look and structural strength for taller runs.
Retaining Stone Walls

What’s the difference between a stone wall and a retaining wall? A freestanding stone wall marks a boundary, defines a garden, or frames an entry. A retaining wall holds back soil and carries load. They’re built differently, so we scope them separately.
Is dry-stack or mortared better in Massachusetts? Both work when built right. Dry-stack flexes with frost movement, which is why old field walls survive. Mortared walls look crisper. But they need a footing below the freeze line, or the joints crack.
Can you repair an old field wall instead of replacing it? Usually, yes. Bellied sections come down and get re-laid with the same stone. Frost-lifted stones get re-set. We source matching material for anything missing.
Do freestanding walls need a foundation? They do. A freestanding wall sits on ground that freezes and lifts. So it needs a compacted base below the freeze line. Built on topsoil, any wall tilts within a few winters.
