Kids don’t care what the playset cost. They care whether they can use it. A backyard play area needs three things beyond the equipment: surfacing at the right depth, drainage that keeps it out of the mud, and a spot you can watch from the kitchen. We handle all three.

What Our Play Area Designs Include
- Site grading and drainage — so the area drains instead of holding water
- Safety surfacing — engineered wood fiber, rubber mulch, poured rubber, or turf
- Correct fall zones — clear space around every piece of equipment
- Equipment setting — playsets, swings, and climbers anchored properly
- Borders and edging — keeping surfacing contained and off the lawn
- Sport surfaces — small courts or turf areas where you want them
- Fencing — fencing where you need the area enclosed

Drainage Comes First
This is the complaint we hear most. A play area on a low spot turns to soup from April through June, which is exactly when kids want to be out there.
So we grade before we build. Where the site holds water, we add drainage. Wood fiber and mulch surfacing both hold moisture, so the base underneath has to shed it.
Artificial turf with a proper drainage pad is often the right answer on a genuinely wet lot. It stays clean and usable after rain.
Placement, Ticks and Sun
Three placement details matter here, and they’re specific to our region.
Sightlines. We place play areas where you can see them from the kitchen or family room. Parents use a yard differently when they can watch from inside.
Tick exposure. Wood chip surfacing along a woodland edge is prime tick habitat, and that’s a real concern in Massachusetts. We keep a mown buffer between play areas and tree lines, and we can add a gravel or hardscape strip at the boundary.
Sun. Dark rubber surfacing and metal equipment get genuinely hot in July. So we look at afternoon shade before fixing the location, or plan a shade structure over it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should play area surfacing be? Engineered wood fiber needs 9 to 12 inches. Rubber mulch needs 6 to 9. Depth matters as much as material, and shallow surfacing is the most common mistake we correct.
What surfacing works best in Massachusetts? Engineered wood fiber offers the best value but needs topping up each year. Rubber mulch lasts longer. On wet lots, artificial turf with a drainage pad stays usable after rain.
Why does my play area get muddy? Usually because the site was never graded or drained. Wood chips and mulch hold moisture, so the base underneath has to shed water. We correct the grade before installing surfacing.
Are ticks a concern for backyard play areas? They can be here, particularly where wood chip surfacing meets a woodland edge. We keep a mown buffer between play areas and tree lines, and a gravel or hardscape strip helps further.
Where should a play area go in the yard? Somewhere you can see from the kitchen or family room. We also check afternoon shade, since dark surfacing and metal equipment get hot in summer.
Can you install equipment I’ve already bought? Yes. We prepare the site, handle grading, drainage, and surfacing, then set your equipment with correct clear zones around it.
Why Parents Trust The Pros, Inc.
We’ve been building family yards from Lynn to Andover for over twenty years. We grade and drain before anything else goes down. We set surfacing to full depth, not close enough. And we place the whole area around how your family actually moves through the yard.
Play areas work well alongside patios, lounge areas for the adults, and pool fencing where there’s a pool on the property. See what our customers say.
