How Custom Lighting Is Relevant to Your Home
You don’t buy lighting off a shelf. You buy a design. Here’s our process:
- Consultation (free, on-site). We walk your property at dusk, listen to how you use the space, and map hazards, features, and focal points.
- Design. You get a lighting plan: fixture types, placement, color temperature, transformer and control layout.
- Installation. Our crews place fixtures, bury and weatherproof wiring, and set the transformer. Typically done in 1–3 days.
- The reveal. We aim, adjust, and fine-tune at night until it’s right. Then we walk the space with you and hand over the controls.
- Care (optional). Annual checkup — trim plant overgrowth, check connections, re-aim fixtures after storms or landscaping changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is hardscape lighting? It’s lighting built directly into stonework rather than staked into the ground. Fixtures sit inside wall caps, step risers, paver surfaces, and pillar tops, so nothing stands above the surface.
Can lighting be added to an existing patio? Yes, but it costs more. Adding wire under finished hardscape means lifting stone and resetting it afterward. That’s why we sleeve conduit during the original build whenever we can.
Will the fixtures survive snow shovels? That’s the main reason to choose them. Flush fixtures sit level with the stone, so you can shovel straight over them. Staked path lights are what get snapped off each winter.
How many lights does a patio need? Fewer than most people expect. Lighting the steps, one or two wall faces, and the entry usually reads better than lighting everything. Too many fixtures flatten the effect.
Is low-voltage lighting safe around kids and pets? Yes. Low-voltage systems run at 12 volts through a transformer, so the wire in the ground carries far less risk than line voltage.
Do I need a permit or an electrician? Low-voltage work usually doesn’t need a permit, though the transformer needs a proper exterior outlet. If new circuits are required, we bring in a licensed electrician.
